I couldnt type the whole title in because it was too long. Well, I had an idea. I recently picked Boktai back up(seems like I never stop playing it) and wondered what I should do after I beat it again now that I have gathered all the parts. Then I began thinking about something and decided to enact my new plan... Extending the Already Abundant Replay Value of Boktai: The Sun is in Your Hand by Devising and Executing a World Speed Run In short I want to do a speed run. I was giong to just go and do it then post it up but wheres the fun in that. I decided it would be much more fun to share the idea and see if there is anyone out there who would like to compete with me just to make it more fun. I also wanted to discuss it with everyone to see what counts and doesnt for a speed run. Here's what I thought should go down: First there would be two different categories of speed runs: New games starting over fresh and Completed games where you use all of the goods you have from you previous games. Second is items. I don't feel that Speed nuts or Bananas(when dragging a coffin)should be used, but would like to hear input on it. Third. The speed run could be segmented. Most speed runs for games are segmented, meaning the person does a certain part of the game(ex. Count's Mansion) and repeats it until they get the desired time and then move to the next part. This allows for the person to shave seconds off but still use the same game. Fourth would be whether you choose to include all undead zones in your speed run or leave the unneeded ones out. This is something I seriously want to do and would like to hear some feedback with people's thoughts on it or declaration that they will be attempting it too. Being the main(only?) hub for Boktai, I thought this place would be good for setting guildlines and rules. SET RULES: 1) This speed run will be done with a completely new file. 2) Cut scenes and text add to time and it's up to the player to rush it. 3) All gun parts are allowed. 4) All items are allowed. 5) Undeads can be avoided whenever possible. 6) Muspell and Garmr's Immortals may be completed in any order. 7) Azure Sky Tower is omitted. 8) Ranking does not matter for Immortals or Undeads. More to come... |

There's another kind of speed run I've heard of - trying to get through the game as fast as you can without ever getting damaged. This can be the only criteria or it can be in addition to other things. As to the issue of speed-up items, I think it's fine for a speed run unless you're trying to get through the entire game without using any items at all. I mean, why single out speed-ups when there are so many other items that help you in one way or another? Technically, anything that helps you will help you finish faster, directly or not. Another interesting challenge would be trying to get through the game using only one weapon. There's also completion runs where you try to get every single item and kill every single enemy, but that'd be really tedius to watch. I wouldn't want to compete personally, but I support anyone else who wants to as long as they record everything so I can watch! |

Oh yeah. I forgot to say that. I planned on using my Game Boy Player and taping it all. As for the Sunlight needed I have a blacklight for the job. |

I might compete against you, but I'd have to use certain programs with questionable legality. |

As long as you dont hack into the game I dont see a problem with them. I just prefer the GBASP to using the keyboard. Plus I dont know if I have a program to capture videos of emulators. |

The recorder is within the program itself. Don't worry, I don't know how or will hack the game. I suppose this will be some kind of free for all? We should set some ground rules for what's acceptable and what isn't. |

I was thinking we could go one of two ways. We could go through and only play the undeads deemed necessary or we could make it to where we have to do them all(excluding AST). Which ever is fine with me but I prefer the one where you cut as many corners as possible to go faster. That makes it more of a speed run and also will make it more managable when we post them up. I retract my first statement and say that any items at your disposal to get to where your going faster. There are some things I would like to iron out and then we can set a date to start doing it. My main question is this: Are we going to use our old turns with all of our stuff or are we starting over? I think that we should use our old turns but if anyone competing doesn't have a complete game then we can do it the other way. We also need to talk about banning certain things like gun parts and other stuff. I dont feel any gun parts should be banned but I just wanted to open it up to suggestion. And as we decide on rules, I will edit them into the first post so it can be there for quick reference. |

I have a second game, but I'm a good part into it. I think it would be more complete if we started off with a clean slate. I'm not the best at speed runs, but I can at least try. |

Ok for this one we can start completely over. I also want to state that all cutscenes text count on a speed run, so it might be a good idea to click through all the talking as fast as possible. Everyone here has beaten it and doesnt need to read the text, anyway. That being said we need to knock out the rules. I am going to list some stuff and everyone who wants to do it(or just wants to vote) can chime in and majority wins. 1) All gun parts be allowed. Y/N 2) All items be allowed. Y/N 3) Does ranking matter? Y/N 4) Does the order of Immortals matter(Muspell/Garmr)? Y/N 5) Azure Sky Tower? Y/N 6) Should Undeads be completed or avoided if possible? And...Thats all I can think of. People should vote and add stuff that needs to be discussed because I am ready to begin as soon as we iron this out. |

1) All gun parts be allowed. Y 2) All items be allowed. Y 3) Does ranking matter? N (Although aiming for an S rank will lower total time) 4) Does the order of Immortals matter(Muspell/Garmr)? N 5) Azure Sky Tower? N 6) Should Undeads be completed or avoided if possible? I agree with Blues. I suggest that we find a day in the spring or summer to do this. Since none of us should be cheating and not everyone has a black light. This is going to be hard to set a date for us all to do this. I mean weather's gotta be nice for us all and time >_> I'd be more than happy to participate. |
